Laodicea

The word Laodicea means "the rights of the people".  Doesn't that seem very fitting for today?  So many are concerned with what is in it for them.   It was (and is today) a time where the rights of the people were considered over the rights of the Lord.   They were in a time (and we are now) when it is easier to manage without Christ than to declare Him.   Both the church of Loadicea and present day church, are finding it easier to have a service without the Holy Spirit than to allow Him to walk among us with His blessings and influence.  SAD !!  And this the the lukewarmness of Laodicea.
This final letter has the distinction of NOTHING good being said about it by the Risen Christ.  This should speak volumes to us.


Back to the actual city, there were more than six cities with this name.  The city the letter was written to is actually called Laodicea on the Lycus.  It was founded by Antiochus of Syria and named after his wife, Laodice.  Year: 250 B.C.
This city set in gorge area and there were limited way around the terrain.  There were 3 roads going into Laodicea as the only easy way through.  Many that were traveling to the cities of Ephesus, Syria, Lydia, Phrygia, Caria, Peergamum, Hermus Valley, Pisidia and Pamphlia plus a few more cities, had to go through Laodicea.

Laodicea was noted for:
1.  Great banking and financial center.
2.  Clothing manufacture center.
      The sheep that feed around Laodicea were famous due to the soft, black glossy wool.
3.  Considered a medical center.
      It actually was home to a medical school.  Two of the more famous MDs were Zeuxis and            Alexandeer Philalethes.
       The school was world famous for the ointment for the ears and eyes.
4.  It had a very large Jewish population.

That is really all there is to say about Loadicea the city.  Now, the Risen Christ had plenty to warn them about.  So, with the next blog, we will dive right into the letter.  Hope you will join me!
