14 The second woe has passed; the third woe is coming soon. 15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign for ever and ever." 16 And the twenty-four elders, who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces and worshiped God, 17 saying: "We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, the One who is and who was, because you have taken your great power and have begun to reign. 18 The nations were angry; and your wrath has come. The time has come for judging the dead, and for rewarding your servants the prophets and your saints and those who reverence your name, both small and great-- and for destroying those who destroy the earth." 19 Then God's temple in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant. And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake and a great hailstorm.
This is a unique passage in that it seems like we are celebrating the end of the woes and God's victory. But, we are only half way through? Remember, this is a prophetic chapter. We are being told what is to happen. Verse 18 is covering the entire millennium...takes us straight to judgment!, to the end of time.
This will be a period of judgment for:
#1. Judgment on nations
#2. Judgment on His servants (rewards coming here for faithfulness)
#3. Judgment on the wicked dead
This chapter is prophetic up to and including Revelation 20:15.
Summary of the events mentioned here:
1. Victory! Psalm 2:2, "The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against his Anointed One."
But, they lose, as evidence by the 24 elders (representing the Church) break out in thanksgiving.
2. Verse 17- God RULES! Really, He will have all authority and it will last the 1000 years. Peace and prosperity will be the order of the day. What a glorious time to come!
3. Verse18- One more attack will be attempted at the end of the Millennium which will lead to a final defeat of the evil on and a last judgment.
Verse 19 snaps us back to the present. It is a vision of the Temple, opened and we see the Ark of the Covenant.
Recall that no Earthly person can lay eyes upon it and live. Well, we are no longer "Earthly people" so, we see it. As God's chosen, and being there with Him, we now have that privilege to be in the glory of God as it is fully displayed.
This may also signify that we have a new covenant with God as the old one was concerning the Ark of the Covenant and the people of Israel. Holy, Holy Holy is the Lord God Almighty who is, and was and shall be...He keeps his promises to his people who believe in Him!
Blessings on All!
